Basecamp: Managing Multiple Ghostwriters & Projects
Written by Garnet Miller
Running any type of business requires at least a modicum of organization and communication. This is especially important when you are talking about an online enterprise. Emails get deleted accidentally and answering machines sometimes do not work. Save yourself the headache with the online collaboration tool, Basecamp.
In a nutshell, Basecamp lets you create a file for your work with ghostwriters and all of your other business projects. If you work with one or several ghostwriters, this tool allows you to keep them and their projects straight right from the beginning. No more notes written on sticky pads. All of your current projects can be managed from one area.
When you see Basecamp, you’ll know why it is such a magnificent tool. Anyone can follow the on-screen directions and create a project.
As a business owner you can use Basecamp to:
- Manage a variety of projects
- Assign ghostwriters and clients to certain projects
- Communicate client requests and changes to your freelancers
- Set milestones within a project to keep everyone on task
- Upload finished work
When you log into the Basecamp account that you setup, each tab will inform you what it is for and offer you a video tutorial on how to use it. For instance, the “Message” tab allows you to post new messages to the projects that you create.
Do you have to check in with Basecamp every day? You may want to but you don’t have to. When you create a project, you can specify with a click of a box which persons will have access to the projects. After composing your messages, you can again click corresponding boxes at the bottom of the post to send it to whomever on the project you want privy to that post. As owner and administrator of the account, you are included in any communication across all projects.
The features that you’ll use the most are:
- Message
- Milestones
- Writeboard
- Files
The first is self-explanatory. Milestones allow you to set due dates for different parts of your project. You can assign more than one milestone to the same writer or separate milestones to separate writers. You can’t give the same milestone to more than one writer but that can be handled with Writeboards.
Writeboards are used to create text files you want everyone on the project to have access to. It’s like a notice board in the town square. You can flag important messages you want everyone to read.
Files are self-explanatory as well. Ghostwriters can upload their work for your review and you can upload an edited version for the clients to access.
Basecamp is a program that you can have fun with. The ease of use means it’s hard to make a mistake that can’t be undone. For managing ghostwriting projects and others this software will help avoid headaches and missed deadlines.

Thanks for the article. I know you can use it to manage multiple projects but does anyone know how to set up the back end for multiple clients? I have recently started using it but can’t sort it so that a specific employee can only access certain projects in the back end. Help…?
Alice Seba says:
Hi Viktoria. “Companies” in Basecamp and those would be your clients. If you want certain staff to access ALL of the information for that company, you can add them to the company. Alternatively, you can give staff access to specific messages. Obviously, anyone who is admin can see everything.

Thanks so much for the reply. I can’t believe I missed that. I didn’t see the button under the “add people” tab. You’re a life saver! Thanks again.

Hi Alice. Me again. You were so incredibly helpful before, I was hoping you could answer one more question. Do you know if you can re-order projects? I know you can change the order of task items and task lists but I am not seeing a way to rearrange the projects under a company subtitle. I spent some time Googleing it but all I can find is how to reorganize the tasks, not the actual projects on my dashboard under the company names. (I’d like projects for each company listed in a chronological order.)
Again, I really appreciate your time.

Hi Viktoria. I am not sure, but wouldn’t Basecamp be able to answer your question?
