Becoming a Better Content Writer
Written by Kathryn Lang
My family has a natural ability to sell. My older brother could sell ice to Eskimos in the Artic and they would be excited about it. My dad has been involved in sales of film, X-ray equipment, vitamins and even doughnuts. I got into the trade when I was seven and started my first business selling lemonade (and ultimately selling my story since I was featured in the local paper and on Paul Harvey’s national radio program).
What do sales have to do with content? Even if you never sell a single item on your website, understanding the concept behind good sales will help you develop better content for your site.
Tips for Becoming a Sales Person
-
1. Start with the idea that you are helping others reach the feeling that THEY want. Take the focus off you and begin to focus on others.
2. Know what you are talking about. Study the subject so that you have the information that needs to be shared.
3. Be willing to ask the “have” and “want” questions that will get others to open up. LISTEN to what your readers and visitors are saying. Repeat back what you heard and then answer honestly.
4. Follow up with your readers and visitors – make contacts through emails, their own websites or even forums.
5. Offer readers the chance to share your content with others on their own website or ask the readers to send others to your websites.
6. Take time to review what you have written in the past. You will see where you have been and if you are moving in the direction that you want to go. Old content can also be made new again by revising that content to meet your new goals (be sure to link back to the old). This time can also be used to correct any errors, mistakes or misjudgments.
7. Focus back on the goal to help others reach the feeling and place that they want to reach.
The One Minute Sales Person sits on my shelf right now. The cover faded years ago and the pages are dog-eared but the words still hold true. The principles set up in the book are not about selling products but about selling yourself. I used the ideas to build my sales but I have also used the same ideas to build my life and develop better content for my website.
Great content comes from the heart. It manages to see the person behind the statistics and finds a way to connect with that person. Becoming a great content writer starts with understanding people.
Learning how to reach out to readers and visitors in order to help them get to the place where they want to be will breathe life into the website. That new life will not only build better content but it will provide words that readers will feel and will desire to share with others.
