Content Writing Tips for Beginners

Written by Kathryn Lang

Creating great content often starts with a passion for the material – either by the writer or by the reader, but often with both. Writing about your passion will show in the words. Readers feel that passion and get excited about the writing. The more buzz created around your content then the more readers that buzz will drive your way.

No matter how great the passion for the subject matter there must be a foundation of quality to the writing. Not every person who starts an online business or develops a website has a natural ability to write. Understanding the basics of good writing can help even the most prose challenged individual create great content. Following simple essay writing guidelines can make a new internet writer into a content creating mastermind, or at least get the writer moving in the right direction.

ABCs of Creating Content

Articulate your intent to the reader. Tell the reader what you are going to tell them. In three to five sentences, lay out the general idea of what you will be explaining in the rest of the article.

Be engaging. Keep the reader engaged by using words that portray action. Passive verbs, those verbs that are forms of “to be,” slow down the content. Showing action through dynamic words keeps the mind of the reader moving along.

Catch the eye of your reader. Make the content easy to scan. Internet readers appreciate bullets, bold print and to the point writing. The main points of your content should jump out at the reader from the first glance at the article.

Delete unnecessary words. Every word used in content needs to make a difference. Editing what you write will help you take out words, sentences and even paragraphs that do not add to the value of the article.

Eliminate adverbs. “When you see an adverb, kill it.” Adverbs add bulk to the content but little value. Try using a different action verb to replace the adverb.

Fix the problems. Editing requires more than cutting words and changing verbs. Do a thorough check of grammar and spelling (or have a friend gifted in grammar and spelling review the article) to be sure you are providing your readers with the best quality content possible.

Go back to the beginning. You told the reader what you were going to tell them, then you told the reader, and now it is time to go back and tell the reader what you told them.

Great content starts with the foundation of solid writing. Sound grammar, correct spelling and basic essay skills can take you a long way toward great content. Tailoring your writing to the internet will help your content stand out in a crowded web.
