Easy Content & Promotion Ideas -> Holidays!

With Canada Day coming tomorrow…and of course, American Independence Day on Monday, holidays are on my mind.

We always celebrate Canada Day with a barbecue with friends. Then being so close to the U.S. border, the kids are lucky enough to travel to Washington State with their grandparents to enjoy the fireworks and festivities on the 4th.

By the way, did you also know that July is “Hot Dog Month”? I know that information should be a real gem for you. ;-)

Outside of holidays being loads of fun, holidays and observances are perfect for planning and creating content and promotions surrounding them.

Whether you’re struggling for blog topic ideas, want to work on a fundraiser or have a special sale for your products, it’s great to know what’s on the horizon. And for your international readers, it always helps to be in the know on what they’re celebrating too.

Here’s a handy list (we shared this with some of our exclusive members at DIYplr.com a few months back) to keep by your side as you plan and publish throughout the year… [Read more...]

Video content is one of the most powerful ways you can connect with your visitors. Videos give your visitors much more of a sense of who you are than text or even audio.

Yet many marketers choose not to do video posts, not because they don’t want to, but because they believe it’s too difficult. Or that it’s too complicated, or that it’s expensive, or that they can’t learn how to do video posts without spending exhorbitant amounts of time.

None of that is true. Here’s how to create video posts in just 3 easy steps. [Read more...]

The Jean Girl: A Lesson in Focusing on the Positive & Identifying with Your Audience

A few months ago, I was shopping for jeans and the sales person said, “You have a small waist like me,” and then proceeded to help me find the perfect pair for me. And they were perfect and one of my most favourite pairs of jeans for sure.

I left the store with a pair of great jeans and feeling great about myself. After all, I had a small waist…the dream of many women.

Fast-forward a few months later, it suddenly dawned on me what she was really saying when she told me I had a small waist. She was saying I had big hips! Instead of highlighting the negative, she chose to focus on my waist, which is small in comparison to my lady-like hips…

This is the last issue of Easy Content Weekly for June and that means, we’re half way through 2011. Can you believe it?

In that time, there has been a lot of great advice, tools and more put together by Alice and her team, so I thought I’d share 5 of my favorites from 2001 so far.

But first, here’s what’s new this week… [Read more...]

22 Ways to Get Motivated When You Don’t Feel Like Publishing or Writing Content

There’s nothing worse than suddenly feeling your motivation deflate like popped balloon.

Heck, it just happened to me a few moments ago and then I decided to write this post.

I had a number of things planned, but kind of felt overwhelmed by it all…so I asked myself to step back and just do one thing. That one thing was the list I am about to share with you.

And hey, after doing this, I feel motivated to keep things going today. I hope it might produce similar results for you when you need it…

22 Things to Get You Motivated and Publishing/Writing Again

1. Take a walk, exercise or participate in some physical activity. It’s good for your body and your brain. I often work for about 2 hours and then go for a nice brisk bike ride before getting back at it. It does wonders for clearing my head and figuring out how I’m going to tackle what’s next.

2. Write it all down. Often when we’re unmotivated, we’re overwhelmed. We have too many ideas and too many things on our plate. Write it all down and figure out what’s important and what’s not.

3. Execute one thing at a time. Once you know what’s important, get it done…one item at a time. Multi-tasking will just bring you to overwhelm again. Do on thing at a time and do it well.

4. Stop being such a slave driver. Forgive yourself when all your tasks don’t get done and realize that some things are just tasks and busywork. Keep in mind what’s really important and focus on those things.

5. Be accountable. Find accountability partners and share your plans and goals with others. It can be very motivating to say it out loud so others know what we plan to do.

6. Take time off when you need it. If things just aren’t going right and you can’t put yourself back on track that day, don’t beat yourself up. Sometimes it’s okay to just walk away and refresh.

7. Schedule your days, even if you hate schedules. I’ve never been one for schedules, but realized if I wanted to balance family, business and grow, I’d have to get organized. A schedule doesn’t mean you can’t be flexibile, but at least you’ll know where you’re going and when you’re going there.

8. For specific tasks like writing or publishing, work in blocks of time. For example, if you’re planning content topics, give yourself 30 minutes to write down anything that comes to mind. After 30 minutes, go back and see which ideas are good ones. I’m sure you’ll find plenty. Do the same when you sit down to write or publish. Tell yourself you’re going to do X for X minutes and just do it. You can correct and refine things later.

9. Listen to music. Music can be very motivating. Personally, I don’t listen to music while I’m writing, but others swear by it. Music comes into play for me when I am coming up with new topics, product launch content ideas, etc. Experiment and see how music and what types of music might motivate you.

10. Get a change of scenery. If you find motivation working on the back deck (like Lynn Terry often does), do it. I like getting out of the house and heading to a coffee shop or restaurant. I get lost in the sea of background noise and avoid the distractions of home.

11. That’s what VAs and kids are for. Do you have content you’ve written, PLR or something from a ghostwriter that is waiting to be published? Ask your VA, your kid or someone else to do it. If your kids are old enough, it’s a great learning experience and cheap labor too…especially if your kids work for ice cream or something easy like that. ;-)

12. Do the profitable stuff first. If you already know something is working, put your focus there first…then work on the new and experimental stuff. You’ll feel more motivated to do it after your accomplishments with the tried and true stuff.

13. Reward yourself. Treat yourself after you accomplish your tasks. It can be something as simple as your favorite coffee, in your favorite chair and a new book or a trip to the beach with the kids. When you’ve done a good job, you deserve good things.

14. Employ volunteer or paid guest writers. Who says you have to write all the content or put your name on it? Guest bloggers or authors or a great way to get content published with zero effort. Hire or enlist someone to write regularly, so you can stay motivated and focused on more important business tasks.

15. Hire a ghostwriter. If you’re looking for more control over the content created for you and how you can use it, you can hire a ghostwriter to get things done for you.

16. Buy some PLR. If you’re on a budget and/or you can’t wait for a writer to complete a project, pre-made and ready-to-go PLR might be the answer. Try APLC and DIYplr to start.

17. Use Time-Saving Tools. Use a plugin like Speedy APLC Publisher to load content quickly to WordPress. Or if there are other plugins and tools you like, make use of them!

18. Scan Headlines. Check out the headlines of your RSS feed, a news site or magazine for inspiration.

19. Failure is Good. Remember failure is simply a learning experience for doing better.

20. Avoid Distractions. Unless you’ve given yourself permission to take the day off, avoid those things that veer you off track. Social media, TV, cleaning, etc…whatever it is that is your distraction weakness.

21. Surround Yourself with Positive People. Are there negative people telling you that you can’t achieve your content marketing goals? Shut them out, where possible, and connect with positive people instead.

22. Be Positive. You can’t always control the people around you, so even more important than surrounding yourself with positive people, be positive yourself. Negative thoughts will almost always defeat you, so keep them positive instead.

Don’t let a slump get you down. Take stock of what you’re doing, what you hope to accomplish and move on from there.
