Day 23: Less Passive, More Active
Written by Alice Seba
Holy smokes…we’re getting close and I’m so happy to see so many participants really getting into this.
I am particularly impressed with how people are really getting into the writing portion…there are a TON of emails being written out of this challenge. We’ve also got members readily putting together their freebies/ethical bribes, working on opt-in pages and tweaking opt-in boxes. Of course, those are good for list building, but it’s still passive list building.
I want to challenge you here on in to get ACTIVE with your list building. Make connections with people, recruit affiliates, submit more guest blog posts…you know the drill. Even if you’re just starting out by exchanging a few words on Twitter or a forum or wherever you hang out…plant those connection seeds today, so they can serve you in the future.
So, let’s get on with today’s stuff. You are hereby challenged to write one email and participate in one list building activity and here’s what I recommend…
Email Writing
Throughout our challenge, we’ve been writing different kinds of emails. From pure content and promotions to product reviews and follow-ups on just about everything. I want you to think about the type of email that is most challenging for you and write one of those. Be sure to let us know below what you work on!
List Building
Do something more ACTIVE for list-building today. Whether it’s to connect, recruit an affiliate, talk to an affiliate directly and make a special promotion for them…or anything? Do it and be sure to let us know about it.

Everybody says "Content is King", but what does that mean for you?

Aurelia Williams says:
Great task today. I will start on emailing the people I have on my list (I have one list asking for affiliates) and another list asking if they will use some of my content on their sites/guest blogging.
Today I spent a little time working on a newsletter opt/in page for my coaching site AND I also added a 2nd freebie for subscribers… http://www.reallifecoaching.net/category/freebie/ Its a rough start but at least it has been started. After reading back through the lessons in thic challenge, I can totally see how having a main page just for an opt in is best. I can’t figure out how to remove the sidebars in WP but will try.
Patti Stafford says:
I sent out an email asking my list if they liked the plain (ugly) newsletter or if they wanted something more colorful and sassy.
I also did some tweeting and actually promoted myself instead of everyone else. **Stomping that comfort zone!**
Stephanie says:
Hi Patti,
Patti – I like your idea for sending out an email to ask about which style of email/newsletter people prefer. I think I will do this.
Definitely stomping on that comfort zone!

Stephanie says:
Hi Alice,
My connection for today:
I have written to a native-Spanish-speaker who has a homeschool website, to ask her if she would like to work with me by translating the course into Spanish for Spanish-speaking homeschoolers.
Stephanie
Stephanie says:
She said YES!!!! Wooooohooooo!
Alice Seba says:
AWESOME!
Stephanie says:
I wrote a broadcast message to my list this day, to promote an article on my website. (This article has been my most viewed this month.)

There you go…maximize your best assets!
Jeanette Gross says:
Wrote another product review, which seems to be the hardest for me.
Signed up at a site that connects Guest Bloggers & Blog Owners looking for submissions.
Aurelia Williams says:
Hey there Jeanette… Care to share what site that is?
Thanks
Jeanette Gross says:
Sure, here it is: http://MyBlogGuest.com .
Alice Seba says:
Great job guys. Keep talking to people directly. Seek out the specific people you think you’d make a good connection with and work it!
Michelle says:
since i already have several auto responders I’m not adding to those but working on adding messages to my list for my new challenge.
Also, commented on several related blogs in my google reader.
Steph says:
For this day, I added another question email on what their favorite christmas present has been. A little scary for me since it may get some odd responses, but should prove to be valuable information!
Also, emailed a few more site owners, as that is the most scary thing for me. I’m working on a list of other good christmas blogs to contact as they become active.
Sundra Taylor says:
I am not that great at doing product reviews so I am working on doing another one.
I really haven’t done much with affiliates. Therefore, I am going to spend time working in this area.
Jennifer Hollander says:
Glad I’m pushing through these because many are helping me with my speaking engagement I have this week.
Email: Another product review for a different client’s product. Cross promotion is great! I usually have no problem sharing basic info and referring others to my clients where it applies, but doing a more detailed product review is tougher for me. So that is what I picked!
List-building: I decided to do a switch-up and ask the realtors in attendance on Thursday at my presentation to share my freebie report on decluttering in 10 steps with their email list and clients. I’m stating they need to include me in the emails and social site @mentions and I will enter them into a raffle for a Project Assessment they can either use for themselves or for a client.
Loving this idea!!
Leisa Watkins @ Wealth, Wisdom and Success says:
Alice,
Loved this: “Today, we follow up because we always follow up.”
The toughest emails for me to write are the autoresponders messages that go past the first five or six days. I start out and think that I’ll get content put in before the first subscriber reaches that last day but it doesn’t happen. To often that listing become stale.
So I ended up having to write an even tougher email – an email that will resurrect that list and attempt to bring it back to life.
I have a list I need to do that for so I just completed an email to hopefully not lose all those people. I created a new list to transfer those people to. I’m sending the email to the list offering them a chance to stay active on our list and giving them some inticement to re-subscribe.
I made contact with a lady who does seminars in my niche and arranged for me to do an introductory seminar to her colleagues with the goal to build a long-term relationship with many of them.
LaTara Ham-Ying says:
I wrote another promotion email on this day. I find it hard to promote my products but this challenge made ti easier to do.
For list building I was actually contacted by young lady who wanted to use my free Spiritual Gift course as a special offer to her list. I had my intern create a page specific to her list and I also offered a percentage off on my coaching services.
