Do You Have a Content Emergency Account?
Written by Annette Elton
A few weeks ago I wrote a post on the benefits of keeping an editorial calendar. It helps keep you on track and is a great place to plan your content. However, if you’re like me and you work on a day-to-day basis, it doesn’t take much to throw you off track. (A couple of really busy weeks threw me way behind when it came to blogging.) For many, a few busy days or weeks and suddenly you’re way behind.
The solution…
…create a stockpile of content or an emergency content savings account, so when life gets busy and unforeseen events arise, your business and your content marketing strategy don’t suffer.
How to Create a Stockpile of Content
Write It.
When you’re creating a content savings account the key is to write content that both fits the needs of your audience and is a bit evergreen. You don’t know when you’re going to use the content so writing something that is timely doesn’t necessarily make sense. Focus on ‘how to’ type articles or fact sheets. Find a few hours this week and create that ‘emergency content savings account.’
If you’re pressed for time, this is often the easiest way to get the job done. When outsourcing your content, make sure to provide your writer or writing team with your keywords and a sample of your writing voice. You can choose your article titles or simply give your writer the keywords and ask for evergreen content.
Private label rights content is also a quick and easy solution. You’ll want to spend some time making the content original. You may also want to make changes to reflect your voice and your necessary keywords. That being said, PLR generally makes great backup content.
What’s the Best Choice?
You might be surprised that as a writer, I occasionally outsource my content and I use PLR. They’re all good choices and you may want to consider using all three to create your stockpile. The goal is to have at least a month’s worth of content in reserve for emergencies. How you create your stockpile depends largely on the amount of time you have right now and your budget.
When to Use Your Content Emergency Savings Account
Like any savings account you may be tempted to use your content on those days when you just don’t feel like writing. That’s fine. However, it’s most useful for those real emergencies. Because any content you use will have to be replaced. Use it when you go on vacation, use it when you have family emergencies, and use it when those unexpected events happen and blogging falls to the bottom of your to do list.

Everybody says "Content is King", but what does that mean for you?

Shannon says:
What an interesting idea and good analogy. I think we all know what happens when we don’t have savings in our accounts.
Annette Elton says:
Hi Shannon, thanks for your response! It’s a painful lesson I learned this past month. Always have backup content!
Alice Seba says:
What a great idea. Another idea is to accept article submissions from other ideas. Those can really help in a pinch.
