How to Write Content With Ease
Written by Angela Wills
There was a time when I actually thought I hated writing. I considered myself a ‘talker’ not a ‘writer’. I was trying to run a business on the internet while avoiding the written word.
Oh how silly I was back then.
But hey, we all need to learn our lessons in our own way and in our own time.
What I learned was that what I hated was the idea I had of writing. I thought writing was this restrictive, proper, rule based, punctuation, grammar police type of thing. Yuck – right? Once I got over myself and my preconceived notion of what writing should be I came to the realization that I love writing.
Why I Love Writing:
While I love to talk and chat and listen there is something that’s even more personal about writing. It allows you to lay out your words in the exact way you want them and to capture the full attention of your reader as they go from top to bottom (hopefully) of your piece.
In terms of business and the internet writing is now my bread and butter. Submitting articles I wrote to directories brings me instant traffic, writing blog posts builds relationships with my target market, writing content for clients brings me immediate cash and writing emails allows me to make sales.
You get a second chance to make a first impression when you’re a writer.
When doing things such as audio and video it’s time consuming to do second takes if you don’t say exactly what you want the first time. When writing you can easily go back, re-read your first copy and edit until good.
I never worry about being perfect though, I don’t think anyone really is.
Since I struggled with writing for so long and finding my own voice I completely understand if you are struggling with the same.
Here are some of my suggestions for just getting over it and writing more than you ever thought you could.
How to Write With Ease:
Know who you are: When you know yourself and write from the heart it almost always works without effort.
Write what you know: When I try to write about things I know nothing about, I struggle. When I’m in my element, I shine.
Challenge your beliefs: I used to think I needed thirty minutes to an hour to write a great article. I kept challenging that concept until I got myself down to writing one article in just ten minutes. That means I can write six times the articles I did with my old, limited thinking!
There you have a few tips on how to write more, more often. I want to wish you good luck in finding and using your writing voice so you turn the need for writing into a love of writing.

Everybody says "Content is King", but what does that mean for you?

Danette says:
I totally agree Angela. As I teach solo-preneurs and service professionals how to productize and package their expertise, it’s amazing how many business owners out there who are challenged by writing. However, after coaching their product out of them, it’s thrilling to see they’ve dropped the perfectionism, they’ve done a sterling job and can’t wait to get started on the next.
So for anyone who is procrastinating about writing, know that being successful online requires writing – articles, blog posts, comments on forums and blogs, etc. So just go with what’s already inside your head, and in your heart, and let your fingers do the walking (on your keyboard).
It certainly does get easier.
Thanks for the great tips.
Cheers
Danette

I need you ladies to pass on some of that writing mojo. It seems that the great writers around the web are female. I am reading and trying to learn and improve.

Angela, congrats from a fellow MM member! I enjoyed reading your first piece here at Contentrix.
I LOVE this sentence.
“You get a second chance to make a first impression when you’re a writer.”
I never really thought about it that way!
I’m looking forward to reading more of your writing. I got inspired at NAMS to start writing articles and your post inspired me even more. 10 minutes .. wow!

Hi Angela-
Welcome to Contentrix! I look forward to reading what you have to say. I too enjoy writing. Sometimes it’s daunting but I think that’s because I put myself on unrealistic time limits at times that I can’t possibly meet.
Again, welcome
Angela Wills says:
Wow what a fantastic welcome. Thank you so much for making me feel at home here already after just one post. I’m really looking forward to getting to know you all!
@Danette – How great that you help people get over that initial intimidation and just go for it. When that happens for them it must be so rewarding to see.
@Darwin – Thank you for the welcome. It’s a pleasure to hear that my writing could somehow help. Just keep looking for your writing voice and writing, you’ll find it.
@Glennette – How great you were at NAMS, I heard nothing but good things about it. Thanks and I’m looking forward to writing more here and am excited to be a new voice out of the very talented ladies at Contentrix.
@Michelle – Thank you. For me the 10 minute time line is a personal challenge. But if you’ve trying to fit too much into a week or day and you’ve got clients or people waiting for you that can make writing stressful and kind of suck away your creativity.
Thanks again everyone for the very warm welcome
Angela

Kudos Angela! My fav part of your article is: “Know who you are: When you know yourself and write from the heart it almost always works without effort.”
So very true and it’s actually the only time I can ever make sense when writing
Angela Wills says:
Thanks Regina!
You know sometimes I think giving permission to be ourselves completely is the hardest challenge. Glad to hear you know how
*(by the way – can you tell I like smileys??) lol

Years ago I never imagined I’d write for any purpose. Yet now it’s become a something I do regularly for my business and I rather enjoy it, most of the time.
You are a wonderful addition to Contentrix Angela so welcome aboard! Thanks for the great tips, I’ll be sharing them with my team members who are struggling with writing.
Joy says:
You’re right Angela. Once I realized that I’m not writing to impress people, rather I’m writing to talk with my reader, it just got a lot easier.
Angela Wills says:
Thanks Melody for the compliment.
Thank you Joy for your comment.

Angela,
It’s awesome to see you here on Contentrix! You are such an inspiration in all you do and write. You are so right about giving ourselves permission to be ourselves.
One of the things I’ve done if I feel like I don’t have time to write but have a ideas coming to me is to just write a quick title with some bullet points so I don’t forget and then I can go back and expand later. The problem is I have too many of those and haven’t found the time to expand, so I think I’m going to challenge myself to start pulling all of those out and expanding on them
. I think it is a helpful idea to do this, but need to add the discipline to make the time to go back and expand on them. Thanks for the motivation!!
