Planning Holiday Content

Written by Kathryn Lang

christmasPlanning holiday content begins long before the holiday decorations go up. That means you need to get started today. Understanding the trends, the terms and taking advantage of both will help you draw visitors to your site with the right holiday and seasonal content.

Keep in mind that the holiday season turns hectic for readers but it may also become chaotic for you as well. Getting organized and planning ahead will help you keep things moving in the right direction even when ribbons and tape cover the office floor.

7 Tips for Holiday and Seasonal Content

    1. Know when to post. The online searches begin just a few days before the great Black Friday and Cyber Monday. You need to have your holiday and seasonal content about shopping – getting the best deals, save on your holiday shopping and other similar articles – ready to go up at this time.

    2. Advertise your post. Social media has opened the door to advertising your holiday content. Post (and pre-post) tweets that link back to your articles so that more people will have a chance to see them.

    3. Think Catch Phrase. Your titles, your tweets and your comments need to include the keywords of your holiday content and a phrase that will grab the attention of the readers and make them click through to your site.

    4. Be persistent and consistent. Planning holiday content means having a regular flow of information that will keep the readers stopping in to your website. Writing the articles and pre-posting them to regularly upload will keep you on schedule. Writing one article per day is a good start as long as you keep the information fresh and relevant.

    5. Stay up to date with your holiday and seasonal content. You may be posting ahead of time but you should also include breaking news or just new releases in your content. This may mean that some days you end up with multiple posts and articles on your website.

    6. Organization is still king. Take a week or so to think about what you want from your holiday content and then make a plan to reach those goals. Write out a list of potential articles for your website. Get a calendar and review the dates of Black Friday – the big shopping day – and December 25 (because online searches typically slow down a few days before). Make a day by day plan of what you need to do before you begin posting your holiday and seasonal content and a continued plan for what to do once the season is here. Be sure to include commenting on other blogs, visiting forums, Twitter and other social outlets.

    7. Talk to your host and website designer. You want to be sure that your site is ready to handle what ever the holiday season may throw at it and that includes an increase in visitors.

The number one key to planning your holiday content is to be prepared. Be prepared to understand the timing of the holiday search increase. Be prepared to know the terms (like Cyber Monday) and to use them appropriately. Be prepared to keep the content flowing during the chaos of your own holidays. Be prepared for a spike in visitors.

Planning for holiday and seasonal content requires that you be prepared. The time that you spend today getting ready for the holiday season could mean the difference between things remaining the same and a large spike in your internet activity.
