Bright Idea: Turning Text into Video

Written by Alice Seba

Bright Idea - Turning Text into VideoOne of the suggestions we often make here at Contentrix is to take your written content and publish it in a variety of formats. More formats mean you get reach more audiences in a variety of places…plus, you also get to cater to your audience’s unique learning preferences.

Of course, you need to make sure that what you publish is useful and of high quality, or there’s really no point in breaking your back to venture into a variety of media formats.

As you probably know, I’m a bit camera shy (but I’m curing myself with our weekly Contentrix Hangouts), so turning text into video isn’t something I do often. I also don’t care much for talking head videos (personal preference), so I was stoked when the crew at Use Your PLR, led by Kelly McCausey and Tracy Roberts, made this for me.

What they do is take an article you’ve already written, had written for you or a piece of PLR and convert it into a 90 second video. I chose a relative short article with a few main bullet points, making it easy to turn into a short piece. Their goal is to keep things succinct and interesting with visual appeal the whole way through. Click play to see what I mean. This is something you could do yourself or certainly hire Use Your PLR to do for you.

If you’re hiring out, it might not be something you can do for every content piece you have written, but you can certainly do it for very strategic pieces of content. We’ll be using this video on the main page of our site, on our opt-in page and a few other places. I had them make 3 slightly different versions of the video, depending on where the video will be shown. The only difference is the instructions for opting in, so the instructions are as clear as possible.

So while I’ve said to publish in formats you can produce the best content for (and I stand by that advice), here’s an opportunity to potentially do something a little different and have a very polished piece when you’re done.

I absolutely LOVE the video and the idea of using articles and highlighting them. Thanks for sharing this Alice and kudos to Kelly and the team who worked on it!

I’m sorry – and I know I’m a bit of a video snob – but I found it boring. No offense intended; I do love you and Kelly. If I’m going to read something I’d rather just have it in written form so I can read it quickly. A video like this I would minimize and half listen while I work in another window. If I’m going to just listen to something I’d rather have a podcast that I can listen to through another device on the go.

If it’s going to be a slideshow type video why not use stock photos and stock videos so there’s at least something pretty to look at? That way the eyes and ears are engaged and neither one gets bored. I’ve done them for clients with good results. You can still put main points in text on the screen and a call to action/logo at beginning and end.

That’s very interesting Jendi and I imagine it comes down to preference because when Kelly showed me what they were working on it appealed to me much more than watching someone talk. The appearance of words might also be appealing to me because I process the written word well. That might be the same with others who also say they like this style of video.

I think the stock photo idea has merit, but with marketing type content it can be challenging. I spend a lot of time illustrating content in different subject areas and marketing/business the hardest subject area to do visually and with any kind of emotional impact. People in business suits, computers and other biz type imagery is often dull. That’s one reason I actually enjoyed Kelly’a design using words.

I plan to have Kelly make a video for my food site, but I imagine that will be much simpler to have photographic visuals, which was my intention as I have been starting the brainstorming process.

You ARE a video snob Jendi and that is as it should be since that is your area of expertise ;)

I respect your opinion and but with 90 seconds of content, I don’t think you need constant images to keep attention.

If there had been obvious purpose for visuals, we’d have used more of them. I agree with Alice on the ‘dullness’ of most stock images that may or may not have helped illustrate the message. Throwing them in, just to have them = MEH!

I think this is a really great service and idea. I have a membership area for my clients. Each week, I do a live call / webinar with them in different topics of internet marketing. It’s a 90-Day Challenge to keep them moving forward since most of them are total beginners. I can absolutely see how these short videos can be used in my members area to grab their attention, give them a brief intro to the topic we talked about that goes along with their homework for the week. I can also see how a short video like this can be used to promote the challenge as well. It’s a crazy couple of weeks coming up, but I’m definitely going to revisit this come the middle of April.
