Understanding Content
Written by Kathryn Lang
The old adage for writing is “Content is king.” That is true no matter if the content is for a magazine, a newspaper or your website. The content has to provide readers with information, answers or other tools that will meet their needs. Content that simply feels space will either be ignored or never discovered in the first place.
The problem that most people have understanding is that content is not just words. Think of some of the most popular magazines. You may remember an article or two, but most are known for the pictures or quizzes or other content contained in the covers. That is true of your website as well as any other periodical type publication.
4 Levels of Content
-
1. Articles – The articles that you post on your website are the content that most people think about. Every article should be well written with correct spelling and grammar. Ask someone else to review your work so that you know the content is solid.
2. Images – Every image that you post on your website is part of the content. Keep the images fun and interesting but keep in mind that all website browsers may load differently so it might be wise to view the images in different browsers.
3. Pages – Most websites will include stagnant pages with information that never, or rarely, changes. This usually includes information that tells about the company or people, explains services, or offers other similar insight into why the website exists.
4. Audio/Video clips – Websites are including video blogs, short commercials and parts of speeches to expand on the information visitors can access when visiting that website.
Content for anything is simply something that keeps the visitor engaged. SEO focused content will increase the search engine rankings through the use of keywords and phrases. The combination of content for the visitors and SEO content for the search engines will help increase the likelihood of other websites linking back to your information (which will also aid in increasing search engine rankings).
Content is king and it is important to put a professional touch to each word that is published on your website. But content is more than just the words in articles or blog posts. Remember that visitors are interested in the images posted on the websites, the information provide in the different pages and other materials that you might provide through audio and video.
Expanding your idea of content may give you the edge you need to push your website to the next level. Provide thorough, professional and regular written content but remember the other elements that will help your website excel. Crown your content with that extra edge that will make your content king with a capital K.
