Don’t Know What to Write About?
16 Ways to Get Over It!

Written by Alice Seba

It happens to everyone now and then.

And for some, it happens often.

But there’s no need to sweat it when you’re not sure what to write about because there are a few things you can do to get over that frustrating situation…

1. Make planning your topics its own activity. Brainstorm your topics ahead of time. Whether it’s weekly or monthly, if you simply take 15-30 minutes to focus on ideas, you’ll be ready to go when it’s time to write.

2. Walk away from the computer. If you’re not sure what to write about and you find yourself procrastinating and getting distracted, just get away from the computer. Go for a walk, play with the dog or your kids. Just do anything that refreshes you for when you’re ready to get back at it.

3. Scan headlines in your RSS reader. Now, be weary of getting so caught up in your RSS reader that you never get out of there, but sometimes just scanning the headlines can give you fresh ideas.

4. Read or watch the news. Find out what’s happening in the world and how it related to your own target market.

5. Expand. Review some of your older popular content and see if you can expand on certain points or create a part 2, 3, etc.

6. Ask your readers a question. Instead of providing all the content, consider asking your readers a thought-provoking question, allowing them to create the content for you.

7. Scan your email inbox. If your readers regularly send you questions, choose a question or two and start writing.

8. Use your favorite keyword tool to brainstorm content ideas. Enter some keywords and allow it to come up with related topics. Try Google’s keyword tool if you don’t already have a favorite.

9. We can do it. Of course, possibly the easiest way is to let us come up with the topics for you. Just try our monthly service and we’ll take care of it!

10. Take a photo. A picture is worth a thousand words and it may inspire you to write some.

11. Demonstrate a product. Showing how to use a product is great information for your readers and can boost your product / affiliate sales too. Take a video or some screenshots to put together a great tutorial for your readers.

12. Make a top 5, 10 or 50 list. Ex. “Top 10 Ways to Keep Your New Year’s Resolutions”. People love lists, they’re easy to put together and they are readily shared online.

13. Interview someone. There’s no need to do all the work yourself, simply ask someone else the questions and publish.

14. Put together a case study. Work with one of your success stories to come up with a case study that not only showcases your ability to help others, but also provides great content for your readers.

15. Make a resource list. Whether it’s resources for digital scrapbookers or parents of colicky babies, resource lists always come in handy.

16. Tie in holidays and special observances. For ideas, download a free copy of the free 2012 Blogging Calendar or look at this holidays and observances quick reference list.

It’s easy to get stuck, but if you’ve got a plan of attack, you’ll always find something to write about it.
