Writing SEO that Flows
Written by Kathryn Lang
A great writer uses words to paint the perfect picture. Masters of the written word spend hours pouring out their heart and soul into prose that sings to the reader. SEO came along and the pretty pictures all became stick drawings. The good news for the writer/artist is that SEO can flow if you learn to use it the right way.
Tops Tips for Smooth SEO
-
1. Understand the what that SEO actually is. SEO (search engine optimization) uses key words and phrases, online tactics and other tools to increase a websites visibility around the web.
2. Understand how SEO works. The number of times that a key word is used or the way it is used in an article can make that article more attractive to search engines. The more attractive an article is in search engines then the higher it will be placed in a search. The goal is to get to the top of the search for key words and phrases that describe your article and website.
3. Understand how to use SEO. There was a time when it was more important to use a keyword than it was to use it correctly. This meant that content playing the SEO game and just scattering the keyword around more would rank higher than articles actually providing information about the keyword. Fortunately, many of the search engines now look at other issues in an article than simply the number of times a keyword shows up.
4. Trading pronouns for SEO. Saying all of those names over and over may wear you down but it will also help lift up your SEO. There are times when pronouns can be skipped and the keyword used without hurting the flow of the article. There are also times when using the same word over and over will drive away the reader. Look for balance.
5. Read your article to gauge your SEO. Taking a few minutes to read your article OUTLOUD can take you a long ways towards knowing if you have overused your keyword or if your SEO flows easily.
6. Use the tools that you have to rate your SEO. Those people writing in the Microsoft Word programs can use Ctrl F to count the number of times a keyword shows up in an article. Divide that number by the total number of words and you will know the keyword density. Aim for something around 3% to 7%. Some sites will not let you have anything over 2%. This article has a keyword density for the keyword of “SEO” of about 3%.
Creating content that is strong in SEO but still flows for the reader does not have to be a challenge. Take some time to write solid content and then work the keywords into the article naturally for the best results.
