Fast Writing Tips For Smart Marketers

Written by Angela Wills

I’m writing this article from my mechanic’s waiting area while my new tires are getting put on. Instead of wasting time going home and breaking up my whole day I decided to bring along my netbook and squeeze in some writing time.

Our days are filled with the much of the same ‘dead time’.

Whether it be waiting in line for 5-10 minutes at the grocery store, waiting patiently at the doctor’s office or waiting for coffee. By making good use of this time you can fit in more writing in and never feel like you’re wasting time waiting on someone else.

So, you’ve decided you’re going to try it! You’re ready to get productive with every moment of your day – but how?

Here are some ideas:

Pen & Paper – For those quick times why not keep pen and a notepad handy so you can take notes on the run. We often come up with great ideas while away from the computer. Even if you just take note and then expand on that when you get back to work you’ll find you’re writing zooms along much more quickly. For the women this is easy, just keep a small notepad and pen in your purse. For the men, keep a notepad and pen in your car and when you know you’ll be waiting grab it so you can get creative!

Mobile Devices – I’ve got a big purse so what I do is pop my netbook in it and go. If you prefer to travel lighter maybe you have a smart phone you can use to record information for your writing. The great thing about many of these is that you can also take a pic too for added emphasis in your piece.

Phones – Again, you’ve probably got a cell phone handy that you can use to record notes to use later. There have been many times where I’ve gotten an idea while out and about and by the time I got home I’ve forgotten everything I wanted to write about. You could just leave yourself a message and then transcribe it when you get to your computer. This is a great option when it’s not convenient to sit and write.

Start thinking about all the places you can use this technique. Write yourself a list so you keep it top of mind. You’re in such a habit of waiting that it will probably take a little while to remember to make the best use of this time.

Once you do get into the habit, however, you may start to look forward to that focused time to pump out some of your best work!
