How Do You Write to Get Traffic?

Written by Angela Wills

Are you writing and writing but feeling like you’re getting nowhere?
If so this article is for you.

We’re going to talk about ways to write to get targeted traffic to your website or blog. Sound good? Keeping reading!

The first step to getting targeted traffic is to have a clear goal in mind with every written piece. Are you looking to covert a reader into a customer? Or maybe you are looking to add more people to your lead funnel that you can follow up with later? These are the two main goals most online marketers have. If your offer is compelling enough then you might try going right for the sale but it will be tougher. Most of the time I’d choose grabbing a new lead first as your conversion rate will likely be much, much higher.

Here are some practical ways to use your targeted content to pull traffic back to your website:

1. Articles:

If you have a website, post SEO optimized articles that draw readers straight from online searches. This make take some practice but it is entirely possible to get visitors who are looking for answers.

Popular types of articles are ‘Top 10 Lists’, ’7 Tips For…’ and lists of ’101 Ways to…’. Often a well-written article or blog post can go viral and have many people passing your link along.

Other ways to find topic ideas:

  • Ask your readers what they want to know next.
  • Check your visitor stats to see what people are looking for when they find your site.
  • Search popular article directories (such as Ezine Articles) and see what others are writing on in your industry.

2. Giveaway Reports:

Don’t underestimate the power of a few free reports. Do a good job of delivering what your market is needing to know and they’ll likely get passed around.

How do you make your reports a hit? Well you could survey your market to find out what they need most. For example, I have a poll on my blog asking my readers what they’re finding most challenging about building an online business. Many responded that they are just not making ANY money, other said they’re skeptical it’s even possible to make money online. So for my market a good report might be ‘How to Make Your First $1 Online’ (which, by the way, is in the works right now!). $1 might not sound like much but to the frustrated and the skeptical I think it just might sound entirely DO-Able!

Here are some more ideas for finding a topic to write about:

  • Look at your visitor stats to see what keywords people are using to find your site – you might get some great ideas there.
  • Look at your competition to see what types of reports they have for both paid and free.
  • Look through your email inbox and figure out if there’s anything that’s commonly asked that would be best answered in a detailed report.

3. Blog Comments:

Another traffic-generating form of writing that can be highly underestimated is blog comments. Finding targeted, popular blogs to frequent and become a ‘member’ of is a great way to draw targeted traffic back to your site. The blog owner has already created a community, all you need to do is build trust with that community and add value. Eventually many will want to check out what you also have to offer.

I comment on a very popular blog quite frequently and it is actually my biggest source of site referral traffic at the moment. This technique works! If you love blogs, make use of that reading with some thoughtful, useful and enticing blog comments.

This article contains just three ways you can use your writing to build traffic. However, it doesn’t end here. Take any of these methods as a starting point and then ask yourself ‘How can I use this content somewhere else now’. A good blog comment can also become a great blog post can become a fantastic report!

Use what you’ve got and make it go far and you’ll start see the rewards in a trickle, then a stream of new people heading towards your own virtual real estate.
